Name: Clive Fremlin Comments: I have followed with interest the developments and comments. An interesting site - thank you. I have been involved with DTS from the very beginning working closely with Gorham Milbank and even before then. The idea then was an honorable one - returning truant children to school and hoping to improve their outcomes. There was a lot of work to do and much debate then as there is now. We got very little funding then and schools were required to top the budget up which of course was hard to do. As with all good ideas better ones it seems come along. Much to do with efficiency, control, monitoring and so on. I am a firm believer in 'if it aint broke don't fix it'. Having said that we have an integrated system operating in Dargaville purely out of practical application; we have had for about 10 years combined NETS and the DTS and it has worked well. I envisage the new set up, whatever it looks like here in the North will be problematic; but we have met with one of the organisations who has tendered for the area and the future if they get it looks promising for the Truancy Officers who are working now throughout Northland from Kaitaia to Te Hana in the South (A vast geographical area is one major issue). | The organisation has travelled to the North and met with all DTS Reps and invited community reps along also to share their vision so I do applaud them for that. One thing I have learnt is that - IT WILL HAPPEN so speaking as the Chair of the Northland Truancy Council we have asked each other in the North to make an effort to support the new concept for the sake of the kids and their families. Yes there are concerns and these must be taken to heart but sometimes we are powerless if we are to achieve what is important. I do hope there is a job for all that are currently employed in Truancy work here in the North from January 2013 onwards; but then these are uncertain times so i guess I had better get a bus licence just in case. Change will happen and I do think it is desirable that we engage and do what we can to get positive outcomes for the most vulnerable. Thank you and have a lovely evening. With kind regards Clive Fremlin Dargaville DTS |
