The Law

Parents are legally required to ensure that their children are enrolled and attend school from their 6th birthday to their 16th birthday. (Section 20)

Parents/Caregivers can be prosecuted for failing to enroll their children. (Section 24)

There are penalties for irregular attendance or condoned truancy (Section 29)

A Principal of a school may exempt a student from attending school for a period of no more than five school days, if the reason is justified (Section 27)
